DETAILS: "Mk" stands for "Mark," the U.S. Navy's designation for ordnance models. The Mk16 Mod 1 was developed during World War II as an evolution of the Mk14, incorporating lessons learned from combat. It uses a hydrogen peroxide-based propellant ("Navol") to power a turbine engine, enabling speeds up to 46.2 knots and a range of 11,000–12,500 yards. The Mod 1 variant reduced the warhead to 960 lb of TPX explosive to extend range while maintaining significant lethality.
 
The Mod 1 traded explosive mass for increased operational reach, making it more flexible for longer-range engagements while retaining the same 533 mm diameter and gyroscopic guidance system.
